Problem:

  • 21% of Philadelphians struggle with food insecurity.

  • Finding low-cost or free food requires time-consuming research on multiple platforms.

Solution:

Feeding Philadelphia complies resources for free and low-cost food into a single app and website.

Goal: Boost access to community resources for Philadelphians experiencing food insecurity.

Target Audience: Anyone in the Greater Philadelphia area experiencing food insecurity

The target audience for Feeding Philadelphia has limited time and energy to search for affordable food. The user persona I created reflects the reality of many Philadelphians.

Final Designs

I conducted an unmoderated usability study to determine if users could easily and efficiently complete the main user flow of locating food resources.
Several users expressed a need for filtering by dietary restriction. Other users suggested related resource pages.

Accessibility was an important consideration in this app’s creation.

Accessibility options include translation, screen reader, contrast, and magnification.

Conclusion

This design emphasizes ease of use for those with difficult day-to-day lives. My research allowed me to empathize with my users and consider the resources that would support their needs. Going forward, I will continue to research and find relevant resources to aid user populations.
